The IRS recognized the organization as a 501(c)(3) public charity, effective August 5, 2025.

Flash Forward Foundation

The letter that made it official

For a group of students building lights in Bellevue, the most consequential piece of mail they may ever receive is not a college acceptance. It is a determination letter from the Internal Revenue Service. Flash Forward Foundation is recognized as a 501(c)(3) public charity, effective August 5, 2025, classified under section 509(a)(2).

What recognition unlocks

The status is practical, not ceremonial. Gifts to the foundation are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law, which matters when a whole study light costs $5.17 in parts and every dollar is meant to reach a student. It opens the door to grants that are only available to recognized charities. And it gives donors, partners and schools a public record to check: the foundation's employer identification number is 39-3605570, and the organization appears in IRS Publication 78, the registry of charities eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions.

The documents

Both records are posted for anyone to read: the IRS determination letter and the Publication 78 listing, linked from the nonprofit status page. The foundation's first Form 990, covering fiscal year 2025, will be posted once it is filed.

Why it matters

A student-run organization asks for a particular kind of trust: that a stranger's gift becomes parts on a workbench, then a light in a student's hands on another continent. Federal recognition does not do the work, but it makes the giving easier and the asking honest. The rest is what it has been since 2024: students building lights so other students can keep studying after dark. You can give on the donate page.
